Он родился в Детройте в 1969-м. В начале 90-х играл хард-боп в молодой, подающей надежды группе Tough Young Tenors. Надежды начал оправдывать незамедлительно: уже в 1991-м Картера приглашают для совместной работы над альбомами такие корифеи как Джулиус Хемфилл и Лестер Боуи.В 1993-м году саксофонист выпускает первый сольник: "JC on Set". Надо было обладать определенным куражом, чтобы, дебютируя, предстать перед внимательной к инициалам Америкой как бы тезкой (Jesus Christ) Иисуса Христа. Кстати, второй альбом Картера назывался Jurassic Classic. А вообще, фамилия Картер - не самая редкая; только в джазовой энциклопедии Мортона-Кука Картеров насчитывается 27 человек…Несмотря на весь этот мессианско-бонапартистский задор, Картер никогда не был революционером и ниспровергателем. Наоборот - он с первых шагов зарекомендовал себя как надежный хранитель вечных джазовых ценностей и вдумчивый преемник мастеров старшего поколения. С такими мастерами он и вступил в творческо-соревновательный союз на своем четвертом диске, Conversin' With The Elders.Звук раннего Картера Мортон-Кук характеризуют как "металлический, проворный, без намека на сантименты". По большому счету, эти черты сохраняются и сегодня. Вот только появилась насыщенность и некая чувственная глубина. Трудно вообразить себе запись с участием Джеймса Картера, где бы он затерялся, ушел на второй план. Carter matches wits with the eccentric trumpeter Lester Bowie on "Freereggaehibop" and the often-hilarious "Atitled Valse"; he also features the legendary (but rarely recorded) Detroit altoist Larry Smith on "Parker's Mood," showcases Count Basie veterans Harry "Sweets" Edison and Buddy Tate on two swing standards apiece (Tate's work on clarinet during "Blue Creek" is memorable), and interacts with baritonist Hamiet Bluiett on "Naima" and an Anthony Braxton march. Switching between tenor, alto, baritone and bass clarinet, Carter makes each of his guests feel at home while pushing them to stretch themselves.
