Glenn Miller dominated the hit parade in 1940: according to the statistics of chart researcher Joel Whitburn, he was more successful than his next three competitors, Tommy Dorsey, Bing Crosby, and Kay Kyser combined. A compilation that really presented the 24 most popular recordings of the year would include...

All of the yearly volumes in Time-Life Music's Your Hit Parade series take liberties, presenting many of the actual hit parade leaders of the year, but also including recordings that were not the biggest hits but are better remembered than those that were, as well as memorable non-hits. The compilers have done more editorializing on the 1941 volume than on most others...

Music in 1942 was subject to two major news events: World War II, which the U.S. had entered the previous December, and the recording ban called by the musicians union, which shut down the recording studios on August 1. The first had a major effect on the subjects of popular songs on this collection.

1943, the second full year of World War II for the U.S., and the first full year of the recording ban called by the musicians union (though Decca Records settled with the union by the fall), was an odd time in American popular music, one in which vintage recordings were re-released for hits and in which new recordings were made a cappella to circumvent the ban....

1944 was an unusual year in popular music, not only because the U.S. was at war, along with the rest of world, but also because the musicians union recording ban was still going on, sort of. One of the three major record labels, Decca, had settled with the union in 1943, and its artists were back recording; the other two, Columbia and RCA Victor, would not come to terms until late in the year....

Time-Life Music's series of yearly samplers under the Your Hit Parade logo does not, strictly speaking, follow that popularity chart or any other, but it does approximate the year's most successful music. Typically, for 1946, the compilers' choice of 24 tracks includes 18 of the most popular songs of the year, 16 of them in their most popular versions. The first full year after World War II was the last in which big bands dominated: ten of the selections here are credited to orchestra leaders, even though every one features a vocalist....

Time-Life Music's Your Hit Parade series of albums, each of them devoted to a single year in popular music of the 1940s and '50s, is the most thorough examination of the hits of those decades.... It's hard to say which of these have turned out to be the more influential or enduring, but the result is that, like the series' other volumes, Your Hit Parade: 1947 is a compilation containing most of the year's biggest hits, plus some recordings that the compilers liked better than the others.

The musical trends of 1948 included the continuing transition from big bands to individual singers, as well as the increasing popularity of lighthearted novelties, often set to arrangements based on diverse musical genres. This excellent compilation, which presents, among its 24 selections, 19 of the year's biggest hits in their most popular recordings, illustrates those trends....

Judging by the charts, this selection contains 21 of the 24 most successful songs of the year. 1949 was a period of rampant cover versions, and in a couple of cases the compilers have not chosen the most popular recording of a song, but every included version was a substantial hit....
