His latest release, Indio De Apartamento, has a contemporary vibe and maintains a supremely relaxed feel throughout, with a pervading underlying jazz presence.The album features a number of special guests, including Ryuichi Sakamoto (piano), Norah Jones (piano), Jesse Harris (vocals), Dadi (electric guitar) and Bill Frisell (electric guitar). Sakamoto’s piano at the beginning of ‘Moca Feia’ begins with an almost interrupting urgent beat, and slowly melds with the guitar and voice, eventually taking over the melody completely and delicately drawing the song to a close.But this is the kind of music where at some point you realise that you’re no longer consciously differentiating between the instruments as separate entities anymore. Instead each disparate part comes together to make music as one whole. And beyond the individual tracks the whole album flows along organically, making gradual shifts from one piece to the next. Even the change in language from Portuguese to English for duet ‘This Time’ with Jesse Harris midway through the album feels like a natural progression.Beautiful bass lines and repetitive rhythmic structures underlie the drive of this album. Cantuaria’s gentle voice is the constant along the way from beautiful ‘Acorda’ (Wake) to the short and danceable ‘Um Dia’ (One Day) which runs to just over a minute. This is a beautiful album even on a first listen, no growing required.
