Review by Francois CoutureIt looks like a very cheesy death metal record: a cover with a picture of butchers cutting a carcass open, horrible "sex & violence"-related titles like "Endless Corridors of Roasted Babies" and "Give Me Head 'Til You're Dead," a note that says "Play loud and die." But it's all an act, as revealed but the way too surreal pseudonyms and stage costumes adopted by the three musicians. Drummer/guitarist Weasel Walter, aka "Necrodevourer," looks like he had problems shaving; cellist Fred Lonberg-Holm, aka "Sado-immolator" makes a very bad impression of The Addams Family's Lurch; while Jim O'Rourke, aka "Lycanthrovampyr," could be the fifth member of Kiss (this one's a treat -- anyone trying to relate this photo to his work in Gastr Del Sol will have a problem).
This CD, as the title stipulates, is a tribute to extreme noisician Masayuki Takayanagi, particularly to his cello/guitar/drums trio New Direction Unit. Track one is a 30-minute-long improvisation recorded live at 6ODUM, in Chicago on July 13, 1996. Lonberg-Holm goes way beyond anything he previously recorded, proving how much decibels a cello can provide, while Walter bashes on the drums like the demon he tries to look like. Hearing Jim O'Rourke on electric guitar is a treat, since his late-'90s activities focused more on computer/mini-disc. But the music doesn't quite reach the "wall of sound" level of some other noise artists. There are pauses to breathe. The next three pieces were recorded in the studio almost four years later, in February 2000. The music gets more extreme, closer to Merzbow (plus drums): it would be impossible to differentiate the cello from the guitars if it weren't for the stereo panning indications given -- all noise. The last track, "Triumph of Death," is a solo electronic piece by Weasel Walter, a meditative soundscape of the underworld. Tribute to Masayuki Takayanagi pairs extreme musicianship with questionable bad taste. If anything, it gives an occasion to hear these three musicians in a very unusual setting.
