Whoever they may be, they craft an irresistibly evocative listening experience on SHAMAN. Keyboards create shimmering and charged atmospheres, suggesting the waft of incense filling a cave or the stars breaking through a midnight mist. Flutes and drums mix against rattles, gongs, and strings as "Vision Quest" leads you on a spiral journey. The sequenced electronic progressions of "Other World" are very trippy -- one might even say shamanistic. On "Trance," polyrhythmic gamelan sounds generate an Indonesian tribal flavor, while "Chanting Up the Sun" is endowed with a ceremonial spirit, bringing Native American drums and flutes together with chanting voices. The final track, "Return," beckons with distant, haunting voices, spirited breaths, and syncopated harp. Troika's aura of mystery may be a bit of a backfire; although they want the listener to focus on the music and not the identity of the performers, the lack of information only made me more curious about who was behind the music and how it was made. Is it played live, synthed, or sampled? But if you're willing to accept not knowing who is playing what and when, SHAMAN can be quite a mystical, rich adventure in sound.
