Stüssi and his loyal sidemen - Alexandre Côté and Bruno Lamarche, saxophones, Clinton Ryder, bass, and Isaiah Ceccarelli, drums - invite everybody on a musical adventure where every composition is a story, told with virtuosity, wit and sensibility.The title tune is inspired by the intriguing work of the dutch painter Hieronymus Bosch (ca. 1450–1516). At the doorstep to the Renaissance, Bosch has created a uniquely phantastic universe using revolutionary techniques, notably that of colouration. Stüssi translates this ambiance into colours of sound and, like Bosch, reaches a resolutely modern artistic expression while staying firmly rooted in the jazz tradition. Balancing the bold and bright with the subtle and shadowed, and the familiar with the bizarre, Stüssi and his band explicitly evoke the paintings of Bosch.“As a composer,” Stüssi says, “I often feel like a painter, creating musical colours and ambiances. I’ve always been fascinated by Bosch’s incomparable work. He was an innovator and explorer, not only in creating surrealistic creatures and demons, or caricatures of heretic clergymen and quacks. Self-taught on jazz piano, he has later studied with some big names: Irène Schweizer, Markus Bischof, Christoph Baumann, Vince Benedetti, Art Lande, and Fred Hersch. In 1996 he won two prices, best band and best soloist, at the Zollikon Jazz Festival in Switzerland. A year later, he graduated from the University of Zürich with a masters in ethnomusicology. In 2005, he toured Switzerland with his Canadian quintet, giving a concert at Moods jazz club in Zürich. Félix Stüssi & Give me five won the prestigious Grand Prix de Jazz GM at the Festival International de Jazz de Montréal in 2007. The two first recordings of the quintet, Give me five (Outside Music/Unit Records, 2007) and Baiji (Justin Time Rercords/EMI, 2008), were very well received on both sides of the Atlantic. Stüssi regularly returns to Europe where he has collaborated, among others, with Bruno Spoerri, saxophonist and pioneer of electronic music, trombonist Nils Wogram, and Jürg Wickihalder, saxophone. Wickihalder and Stüssi are members of the octet Sam Trümpy Memorial Jazz Coalition which has released a CD of the same name on the label Altrisuoni in November 2009. In Canada, Stüssi also writes for a very dynamic trio, Les Malcommodes, which he has formed with Daniel Lessard on bass and Pierre Tanguay on drums.In 2010, the third album, Hieronymus, is released on Effendi Records. Stüssi invites everybody to join him and his loyal sidemen - Alexandre Côté and Bruno Lamarche, saxophones, Clinton Ryder, bass, and Isaiah Ceccarelli, drums – in an adventurous musical journey.
