Eisenbeil's guitar approach is based on modes rather than conventional changes, and his licks are fresh and distinctive. He achieves his goals on "Caesar," a 16-minute conceptual sculpture, because the blues-scale riff fragments he inserts offer a variety of musical textures, each with a different sonorous character. On the ballad "Woman With a Handful of Rain," his use of a long single note on his solo provides the listener with a variety of harmonic changes that capture the vivid imagery of raindrops falling and also infuses the work with the kind of vitality that helped establish the characteristics for which Eisenbeil has become known. Mural is a free wash of musical textures, a wholly improvised artistic vision delivered from an innovative and exploratory consciousness and should garner Eisenbeil additional involvement on the free and improvised music scenes.*** Improvising guitarist Bruce Eisenbeil’s acute vision and authoritative control of his instrument is conveyed in gleaming fashion on this live Trio date titled, Mural. He’s been creating a buzz around the New York City area since emerging on the modern jazz scene a few years back as a complex musician who integrates buzz saw like single note runs, with sweeping chord progressions, smooth clear toned picking, delicate phrasing and more. Here, along with drummer Ryan Sawyer and bassist J. Brunka, Eisenbeil exhibits startling chops yet pursues cunning thematic development while reaping the benefits of a sturdy and altogether flexible rhythm section who share Eisenbeil’s penchant for rapid motion and highly literate improv. Pieces such as the 16-minute “Caesar” and “Woman With A Handful Of Rain” depict fierce conversational activity as Eisenbeil is ever the instigator while directing traffic and shifting the pulse on a moment’s notice as the rhythm section also illustrate their highly individualistic voices. Here and throughout, Eisenbeil is also a colorist and somewhat prone to execute heavy handed and incredibly quick strumming, as the illusion of two guitarists come to mind within several passages. Complimenting and rounding out a rather ubiquitous group sound, drummer Ryan Sawyer often works behind the pulse or on top of it, while J. Brunka is apt to toggle between arco-bass and fleet-fingered single note lines as the trio exhibit tireless energy often producing a hypnotic and somewhat circuitous flow. Her is a guitarist who plays as intimately as Wes Montgomery, but who hears harmony s an open chromatic field. His busy chords flutter like starling's wings, gently occupying the harmonic spaces broken into by McCoy Tyner and John Coltrane in a more strenuous, heroic epoch. His originality is evidenced by the fact that he has transcended the distinction between a leading line and comping strum: He improvises the changes, turning harmonic speculation into the substance of the music. Instead of cacophony, what results is aerated and free. The Crosscurrent Trio is Jason Brunka on bass and Ryan Sawyer on drums. They're committed to Eisenbeil's concept, reveling in the exoticism of "Caesar," following his luxuriant speculations with gorgeous washes. Brunka bows resourcefully, and Sawyer is adept at the drum rolls and cymbal shimmers that make the drum set as much a textural scene-setter as a beat machine. On "Crucifixion," they make Eisenbeil's instant melody line hover in the air with hallucinogenic clarity.The avant-garde doesn't often have time for sentiment, but the theme of "Woman With a Handful of Rain" is so melancholy it brings a lump to the throat.
