Don't You Know  AMG ReviewA powerful duo release featuring two of avant-garde jazz's contemporary masters. Melford plays acoustic piano exclusively while Marty Ehrlich moves among alto sax, clarinet, and bass clarinet. Each partner contributes three compositions, some of which have appeared on their own previous albums in full-ensemble contexts. The recasting of these pieces as duets will therefore be especially revelatory to fans who have closely followed the recording careers of each player. Two of the Ehrlich selections, "March Fantastique" and "Duiloquy," are brand new, and there are also soulful covers of "The Natural World" by Robin Holcomb and "Don't You Know" by Otis Spann. Melford and Ehrlich create quite an impressive emotional range, from the searing cacophony and driving tempo of the opening title track to the contemplative, almost trancelike mood of "Yellow Are Crowds of Flowers, I." ("Yellow Are Crowds of Flowers, II" appeared on Dance Beyond the Color, the 2000 release by Myra Melford's Crush trio.) Their rapport as a duo is seamless yet awash with creative push and pull; their repertoire yields a satisfying, full picture of the stylistic breadth of the avant-garde, from the floating, contemporary classical sounds of Melford's "Here Is Only Moment" to the unabashed blues of the Spann piece. ~ David R.
