David ChevallierDavid Chevallier is a maverick.
Refusing to be confined within a musical style, he cultivates his difference, and creates works at the intersection of universes that are a priori remote from one another. Perhaps this is due to his personal trajectory - musician parents, a thorough training in the classical guitar, empirical discovery of jazz, improvisation and composition - or perhaps it is no more than a form of resistance. Whether as an instrumentalist in the groups of Laurent Dehors, Patrice Caratini, John Taylor and Jean-Marie Machado, or as leader of his own projects, David Chevallier has always shown a determination to be original.
Hence, after setting to music novellas by Dino Buzzati and poems by Cesare Pavese (in his astonishing album "The Rest is Silence" written specially for Elise Caron), David Chevallier recalled the madrigals of Gesualdo, which had made a strong impression on him, and conceived this programme of "Gesualdo Variations". He subsequently worked on the lute songs of John Dowland with the soprano Anne Magouet, also a member of the "Gesualdo Variations" team, and the theorbist Bruno Helstroffer.
Then came "Is That Pop Music", with the remarkable singer David Linx and four faithful companions: Yves Robert, Christophe Monniot, Michel Massot, and Denis Charolles.
Eclecticism and coherence, a taste for risk-taking, and sensuous pleasure: these are the key words that characterise this resolutely atypical musician.

Review by Stephen EddinsFrench composer and guitarist David Chevallier has a varied musical background but has devoted most of his career to free jazz, and he brings that sensibility and aesthetic to these arrangements of six late madrigals by Gesualdo. A vocal ensemble performs the madrigals, sometimes singing sections exactly as written and sometimes with the individual lines deconstructed and then reassembled in new ways. Chevallier adds a layer of new material played by an ensemble consisting of saxophones, viola, cello, violin, and guitars, including electric guitar. In spite of the unconventional makeup of the group, Chevallier deploys it like a traditional free jazz ensemble, with plenty of opportunity for improvisation. The sound is often fresh and imaginative, and allows the listener to hear the Gesualdo filtered through an intensifying contemporary perspective. Some of the pieces suffer, though, from a sameness in structure; many begin with the singers undergirded by the instrumentalists who expand the harmonic vocabulary of Gesualdo's already eccentrically chromatic harmonies and add new contrapuntal activity, followed by a mostly improvised jazz break for the instrumentalists, then returning to a mixture of all the performers together. The most effective pieces are those that break that pattern, like Itene, which opens with the instruments alone, and Moro, lasso, which begins with the voices singing the madrigal just as written, with the instruments gradually adding textural complexity. Io pur respiro is also persuasive in the way the text drives the instrumental contributions; the ending, a long chromatic spiraling down into despair, is especially evocative. Members of the French vocal ensemble A Sei Voci sing beautifully and do an amazing job holding their own in the midst of the sometimes dense thicket of added instrumental harmonies and textures. The instrumentalists perform with warmth and with sensitivity to the original material. This release is an excellent example of well-executed jazz/classical crossover and should be of interest to fans of that genre. Zig Zag Territoires' sound is clean, warm, immediate, and well-balanced.

Об альбоме (сборнике)David Chevallier was previously noticed with his combination of jazz and madrigals of Carlo Gesualdo ("Gesualdo / Variations" which was rewarded by Choc Classica). This time, this adventurous guitar player has chosen to explore the boundaries of jazz with this very personal interpretation of British pop and rock standards.
The idea was to operate in a genetic way, by isolating the essence of Brit Pop masterpieces, by changing them more or less and finding the right tunes not to alter the original pieces but at the same time making it sound totally new. For this exercise, close to a tightrope walker, in which many jazzmen previously failed, David Chevallier has picked sidemen with a strong personality, a great creativity. Their energy added another dimension to the music. As you listen to this reinterpretation, you will feel a reassuring joice by hearing these well-known standards just as you will re-discover the music with a great freedom dear to jazz.
