Review by Anatol Schenker
The majority of the music heard on this CD was recorded on February 26, 1952. At the time equalled more than two complete LP's. Compared to today's standards it seems quite incredible that so much material - and perfect at that - cold be made during one recording session. But even in the fifties only Erroll Garner and a few other jazz artists needed so little time to produce so much excellent music ! [...]
Volume five of the recordings of Oscar Peterson presented in chronological order opens with two remaining tracks from his first session of the year. We have always had a weak spot for both of these standards - no least because of the present versions. The aforementioned monster session started out with an extended blues in honor of Fred Astaire. Later that same year Peterson, plus several stars from Norman Granz's stable accompanied the great actor/dancer/singer. The lines of this fast (and partly somewhat pyrotechnical) blues were then used during a tap dance routine by Fred Astaire. On the vastly superior rendition of "Body and Soul", Oscar Peterson gives a bow to Nat King Cole's playing on the July 2, 1944 JATP concert. Several of the recordings included here were originally issued as a complete side of a ten inch LP and were particularly long for the time. A great CD from 1-Z ! To be continued...
