Об исполнителе (группе)by Alvaro NederThe self-taught trombonist Vittor Santos is an important name in big band jazz in Brazil. As sideman, Vittor Santos worked for artists like Ivan Lins, Leny Andrade, Antônio Adolfo, Chico Buarque, Alceu Valença, Moraes Moreira, Carlinhos Vergueiro, Zizi Possi, and Beth Carvalho. In 1985 he formed the Vittor Santos Orquestra, a jazz big band which worked until 1992, having recorded the album Um Toque Tropical. In the next year he formed the In Concert orchestra, another big band. The Vittor Santos Orquestra regrouped in 1998, then performed in 1999 in the Free Jazz Festival.
Об альбоме (сборнике)by Scott YanowVittor Santos has a warm sound on his trombone and a restrained style that occasionally cuts loose to reveal that he is a great virtuoso. Performing in a quintet/sextet with one of three pianists, guitarist Fernando Clark, bassist Rodrigo Villa, one of two drummers, and (on two numbers) Hamilton de Holanda on ten-string mandolin, Santos plays with the warmth and fluidity of a Bill Watrous. The material, all of which is obscure and much of which is new, is full of rich Brazilian melodies that inspire Santos and guitarist Clark to be at their most expressive. A delightful set that makes one realize that Vittor Santos should be much better known in the United States.
