During the sixties, he left his study of sociology and started his music career instead. In 1968 Kriegel started playing with American vibraphonist Dave Pike and started his first jazz fusion group, THE MILD MANIAC ORCHESTRA. In 1971 he released his debut, "Spectrum", which is considered his finest effort and was a milestone in European fusion. Later he played guitar on two studio albums by the electric violinist Don "Sugar Cane" Harris, "Keep On Driving" in 1970 and "Sugar Cane's Got The Blues" in 1971. In 1972 he released hid second solo album "Inside: Missing Link". Two years later he founded United Jazz and Rock Ensemble, as well as releasing several quality solo albums, including "Lift" and "Journal". The United Jazz & Rock Ensemble united many of Europe's excellent musicians, including Kriegel on guitar, providing most of the rock sound. He played with the band throughout their 2002 farewell tour and died of cancer in 2003. Aside from his music career, Kriegel was a writer/illustrator. Some of his best known works include Der Rock 'n' Roll Konig (The Rock 'n' Roll King) and Olaf dem Elch (Olaf the Moose).  Об альбоме (сборнике)Many argue the roots of Jazz/Rock Fusion music, and the positions vary, many say it started in the USA or UK with Miles Davis, and some of his band members, hard to argue with names like Corea, McLaughlin, Zawinul, Hancock and the rest, but while these notable artists were etching out a new and exciting brand of expression, there was a scene happening co currently in Europe, and there are many pioneers that helped the scene, albeit, few of these artists ever became as popular by name as the more luminous musicians that are generally considered by popuar vote.A record label called MPS, helped get a few of these talented European jazz and fusion artists heard, it wasn't unusual to find these MPS records at local record stores, and those willing to purchase these obscure lps with little of no forknowledge of the artists were typically in for a nice surprise while spinning the album at home. Volker Kriegel (born - 1943 - died in 2003), is one such artist, Kriegel was doing ensemble jazz in Germany during the early 60's with the Mangelsdorff brothers, Albert and Emil. Keeping an open ear to the rapid changes in the music scenes around the world, he started his Mild Maniac Orchestra and since made an impressive list of fusion records that should be on most fusion fans list of things to get. This particular recording, to my limited knowledge, is Volkor Kriegel's first as a solo artist. While not jazz/rock in the truest sense, certainly experimental enough beyond the strict virtues and disciplines of jazz, it nearly hints at things to come, as he does employ what some might have considered Avant Garde and Rock sounds along with Jazz structures, while not fusion as we accept it, it was very forward thinking for it's era. I would only suggest this record to those that are completists collectors, as this doesn't stand against Volker's more creative and impressive work on later albums, still a nice novelty for a man dubbed as "The Father of Jazz Fusion".  Состав-Volker Kriegel / guiatr, sitar -John Taylor / electric piano -Peter Trunk / bass, electric bass, cello -Cees See / percussion -Peter Baumeister / drums, percussion
