Review #1:What a shame this was never released. It only takes a couple listens to realize
this is a remarkable and inspiring piece of work. Full of earthy tones and
European styles, this is much more than a jazz-prog burst of originality. This is
one of the greatest American pieces of true artistry to be found. I love it and am
so glad I gambled on this one. I think it is much better than Transformation, the
previous album by Sancious. It has a similar style in places, but incorporates
some group vocals and more pathos and feeling. A much more cohesive album that
definitely evokes a certain mood. It often alternates between melodic,
contemplative pieces, with moody vocal sections, and also jazz-fusiony strecthes.
Get it if you can find it! ...
Review #2:Dance of the Age of Enlightenment was to be a watershed album in that it was
produced with the latest technological innovations of multi-track, studio
recording using three synchronized 24-track reel-to-reel tape recorders (first
time ever accomplished on record). The unheard of number of synthesizers and for
that matter the music itself were ahead of their time. So much about this
particular album approached the fantastic. The ultra-modern vocal harmonies, sharp
rhythmic development and innovative use of contrasting keyboards from one figure
to another (i.e., polysynth, piano, harpsicord) created such an effusive work of
high art that, to the cynical (and realistic), it was destined to be doomed to
musical assassination by the mediocre record execs who sold out to what is now
commonly understood to be the beginning of the end of all that was good in music
(Progressive Fusion) before the scourge of the 80s pop wasteland. Epic Records now
wanted out of fusion altogether and basically let David Sancious & Tone wither on
the vine. David got (what he thought would be) a better deal from Arista Records
and was signed to that label. Arista then secured the rights to "Dance of the Age
of Enlightenment" and prepared to release it. Artwork, liner notes, test
pressings, everything was all prepared for release. Arista pulled it at the last
minute. Shaken by the ordeal, the band regrouped and began working on new material
with a more vocal approach. Some of this music gets played for concert audiences
in 1977.
