Its members bring a wealth of experience in both classical and jazz music to create a unique sound of their own. Skilled improvisors and polished ensemble players, they traverse a tremendous range of music and match their expansive techniques and subtle dynamic shades to the demands of each piece they perform. A direct outgrowth of the Max Roach Double Quartet, the Uptown String Quartet has launched a highly successful independent career, beginning with their debut CD on PolyGram label and their New York debut at the 92nd Street Y in 1990. That debut recording, Max Roach presents the Uptown String Quartet, presented a variety of pieces commisioned especially for the recording from various composers selected by Max Roach. Just Wait A Minute, their 1992 Bluemoon release album was also met with tremendous critical acclaim. The Uptown String Quartet is everything, you wouldn't expect a string quartet to be. With Classical music backgrounds and string training, these women devote themselves to all styles of music of the African-American cultural heritage. Their repertory includes all original works and arrangements that cove jazz, the blues, ragtime, spirituals, and rhythm and blues. Their music was featured on the soundtrack of Spike Lee's film, Do the Right Thing, and they have appeared in television programs The Cosby Show, CBS Nightwatch, The Today Show, The Eleventh Hour, and the WGBH program Say Brother. The Uptown String Quartet really began as part of the Max Roach Double Quartet. Their 1985 joint recording had John Williams and Cecelia Hobbs on violins, Maxine Roach (Max's daughter) on viola, and cellist Eileen Folson. By 1986, the string quartet had its name and the personnel of violinists Diana Monroe and Lesa Terry, Maxine Roach, and cellist Zela Terry. By the time they debuted in 1989 on record as a separate entity of their own, Monroe, Lesa Terry, and Roach were joined by Eileen Folson; the personnel would remain the same. One of the very first string quartets to improvise (they were preceded by Turtle Island), the group's repertoire on their two releases (for Philips and Bluemoon) ranges from bop standards and traditional folk songs to new advanced originals.     Об альбоме (сборнике) The Uptown String Quartet was originally part of Max Roach's Double Quartet before having its own life. Comprised of violinists Diane Monroe and Lesa Terry, Maxine Roach on viola and cellist Eileen Folson, the group ranks as the second major improvising string quartet ever, after Turtle Island. On this consistently enjoyable and often-surprising CD, the band plays a wide range of music including several ancient folk songs, John Carisi's "Jelly Roll Rag," Oscar Pettiford's classic "Tricotism," Scott Joplin's "Easy Winners" and some modern originals by Max Roach, Odean Pope, Fred Tillis and Cecil Bridgewater. Listeners who have a resistance to hearing violins play jazz are well advised to check out this colorful effort.     Состав Diane Monroe Lesa Terry Maxine Roach Eileen Folson
