Even if I sometimes wonder whether that public actually gives a damn about it. Anyway, Le Bocal are another large group of aficionados who refuse to let the modern day composer die and, in fact, inject his work with their own brand of vitality and musicianship. I’ve always thought that one of Zappa’s most memorably creative periods was the time that produced such nuggets as ‘We’re Only In It For The Money’, ‘Uncle Meat’ and, in a different way, ‘Weasels Ripped My Flesh’. And sure enough a fair amount of the material here comes from those albums. The perennially wonderful melody that is ‘Oh No!’ is given two outings, once purely instrumental, with rhapsodic piano, and once with those lyrics which ought to prove to anyone remotely interested that Zappa didn’t just write about the puerile topics that make adolescent boys snigger. In fact, the vocal version that closes the cd is possibly the most sensitive reading I’ve heard with Ernie Odoom singing over sublime trombone and guitar. I kept waiting for a musical belch or crude intrusion but no, they play it straight and it really is beautiful. As it always was. Instrumentally, this band has all the polish and muscle of Zappa’s last road band, as the first version of ‘Oh No!’ testifies, but that eternal favourite ‘King Kong’ produces one of the album’s highlights in the shape of ‘guest’ Laurent Zeller. Once the band have laid down the stately theme Zeller’s violin simply sizzles with sustain and electricity, though not like Jean Luc Ponty or Sugarcane Harris did. This sounds more like a Zappa guitar solo transmuted via some arcane process into one of the most exciting violin sounds I’ve heard in a long time. From later in the oeuvre, ‘The Grand Wazoo’ is handled with impeccable timing and instrumental colour. They demonstrate the collective verve of a big band in full flight whilst making room for the eloquence exhibited on solos by guitarist Eric Minen and a trombonist, who I’m guessing is another ‘guest’, Glenn Ferris. He has a subtle rasping tone that wraps itself around some melodic improvisations and is distinctive enough to make me think that Zappa himself would have approved. Other tunes given slightly different leases of life include ‘Take Your Clothes Off When You Dance’ which now comes minus words and is given a smooth guitar led treatment. You could, in fact, dance to its Latin-esque rhythms until things speed up with the inclusion of some time changes that Uncle Frank was so fond of employing. And ‘Little Umbrellas’, the nearest to a death march melody he ever composed, is given the benefit of a range of instrumental voices, from clarinet to solo piano to a splash of coruscating electric guitar, stretching the piece and endowing it with new textures that complement the original. I have to say I know nothing about this exhilarating ensemble, except for names and instruments, but their obvious love of Zappa’s work makes such detail virtually extraneous. Hear it, whether you’re a Zappaphile or not, would be my advice.
