And above (this is music after all) Hélène has a great SOUND. Her writing is erudite and adventurous, but above all as ORGANIC as her playing. 'Nature' seems to flow through her as naturally as fruit arriving on the branches of trees when the sun and the rain have done their work. I have heard her in diverse contexts, but not, I think, before this beautiful CD, as director and principal catalyst. And she's chosen her comrades here so carefully: these musicians know how to play together, as part of a living and coherent organism. Anyway (words are inevitable clumsy) as the cliché has it, this music speaks for itself. Pay attention this fruit is ripe: now feed your ears!«Salam and Takadum»Robert WyattCreating musical tension is not an easy task : you need to work on a sense of anticipation from the listener, who enjoys the surprises and contradictions he or she is confronted with, wanting to hear more of it, anxious about how the music is going to evolve, eager to know where it's going to end. And tension is exactly one of the major qualities of the second album by French bass-player Hélène Labarrière. The very first tones of "Soizig", the first track, already suck the listener into this feeling : brushed drum-playing, with rhythmic but asymmetric bass-playing is spiced with eery metallic sounds by guitar and sax. Tension is built, with little flourishes of relief, but not yielding everything. Labarrière is joined by François Corneloup on baritone sax, Hasse Poulsen on guitar and Christophe Marguet on drums. The contradiction is to be found in the tension between the incredible sense of rhythm, often repetitive and hypnotic, over which odd and often abstract unisono melodies are played, making the music inviting yet unfamiliar, forming the basis for controlled improvizations. The four band members are absolutely excellent in the overall unity of style the record brings, switching between soft loaded passages and fierce intense moments with screeching guitar and whailing baritone sax. Corneloup is a great baritone sax player as I mentioned earlier and Hasse Poulsen uses lots of extended techniques on his guitar and litterally with great effect. The only track which does not really quite fit is "Good Boy", bringing a folky melody on the acoustic guitar, a little bit too joyous for the dark mood and complex elaborations on the rest of the album. The title ("times are changing") not only refers to the time in between sounds (rhythmic definition), but also to the fact that because times are changing so fast (real life definition), we should not be deaf to the world and listen carefully, but above all, we should have a sense of urgency in what we have to say and play even more lively. That is what Hélène Labarrière writes about her own music. Plus encore quand son titre vous rappelle l’avertissement d’oncle Bob : "And Keep your Eyes Wide / The Chance Won’t Come Again / And Don’t Speak Too Soon / For the Wheel’s Still in Spin." (The Times They Are A-Changin’)Les yeux grands ouverts, en effet, et l’esprit : Hélène Labarrière vous emmène au-devant d’un monde aux couleurs et aux formes changeantes, aux ambiances sombres ou faussement simples, calmes ou déchirées/déchirantes.La visite se fait dans un sens défini : les compositions s’enchaînent dans un ordre précis ; en plusieurs occasions, insensiblement, les dernières mesures d’un morceau appellent le suivant au point qu’on ne conçoit pas d’écouter une plage seule ("Un jour plus tôt" / "Regard suspendu" / "September the Bass" ; "Histoire de collection" / "Une femme sous influence"). D’ailleurs les titres eux-mêmes...De morceaux non mesurés en binaires ou ternaires réguliers ou pas, de riffs de contrebasse en envolées de guitare parfois hendrixienne, de chorus "free" au baryton en basses presque funk, le quartet se promène et nous promène dans un enchevêtrement où il est souvent difficile de distinguer l’écrit du spontané telle est la qualité d’écoute et de communication entre les musiciens. L’auditeur n’est jamais laissé en repos : quand une tension se résout, c’est dans une fausse sérénité folk ("Good Boy") que dément l’inquiétante pédale de La jouée par le baryton tout au long du morceau. Ou bien dans une chanson populaire, certes, mais cruelle ô combien : "La complainte de la butte", introduite en pizzicato par une contrebasse en granit brut, comme les escaliers...Leader - guide, non dictateur -, Hélène Labarrière compose, propose et n’impose pas ; les apports de chacun des musiciens sont à égalité. Il faut dire qu’elle s’est choisi des compagnons de route à la mesure du propos. Si l’album est tout entier placé sous le signe de la mouvance et du passage, ces musiciens sont aussi de fieffés passeurs de frontières : François Corneloup au saxophone baryton, anguleux et sinueux, Hasse Poulsen à la guitare - peut-être devrait-on dire aux guitares tant sa palette de sons et de textures est étendue - et Christophe Marguet, batteur-peintre aux contributions étonnamment... graphiques.Les temps changent et nous changent. Je l'avais vue sur scène à Charleville-Mézières et à Créteil, à l'avant-poste du Dondestan project - Variations sur la musique de Robert Wyatt. Avec Sylvain Kassap, elle y faisait vibrer cette atmosphère jazz et boisée que RW revendique dans tous ses interviews. Robert Wyatt connaît bien Hélène Labarrière: il l'a même invitée en 2001 au Meltdown Festival dont il était le programmateur.Cet album, Robert Wyatt l'a écouté et l'a aimé. Sur une de ces cartes postales qu'il adresse souvent à ses correspondants de par le monde, il nous dit tout le bien qu'il pense de la musicienne et de la compositrice.
