Cheap, easy to learn and very portable, it superseded the banjo as a rhythm instrument between the wars. But, in the early days at least, soloing was scarcely encouraged. It is said Count Basie's long-serving six-stringer, Freddie Green, didn't play one for fully four decades. The advent of amplification in the Thirties gave the guitar's fortunes a boost helping it elbow its way to the front of the sound spectrum. In the blues world, the likes of T-Bone Walker and BB King were to adopt a flowing, legato playing style, imitating the horns, that took advantage of this, and their influence would spread across the genres into neighbouring jazz. The arrival of bebop in the Forties shattered many existing musical conventions and offered the guitar the chance to break through as a front-line in-strument for the first time. By the time rock flowered in the Sixties as blues roots merged with psychedelia, its status was no longer in question. But our collection here pre-dates that raucous era, concentrating on the music of the Forties and Fifties when a Gibson semi-acoustic or similar was regularly to be seen on the bandstand. The guitarists whose music we have assembled for your enjoyment represent the wide range of styles that can be fitted under the jazz umbrella. But there is one common factor: the vast majority owe their inspiration to one Charles Henry Christian. Charlie Christian's reputation rests on the recorded work he accomplished in the last few years of a life about which relatively little is known. His origins have been traced to Oklahoma and Kansas City and it is thought that he played throughout the Midwest in the Thirties, but not until he joined Benny Goodman's orchestra in 1939 did he make a real mark on music. Though he died in 1942, the legacy he created in his final years led the way for disciples like Wes Montgomery to follow. Montgomery was something of a slow starter who didn't even pick up a guitar until the age of 19-but he turned out to be a fast learner. He first heard Charlie Christian on record in 1942 and so inspired was he that he was playing professionally just six months later. By the end of the Forties he had begun his trademark use of octaves and chords in solos. Kenny Burrell was another player who followed in the footsteps of Charlie Christian, and has stayed at the forefront of the jazz scene for longer than most; at the time of writing he is still going strong at the age of 79. He took up the guitar at age 12 at a time when jazz was about to sustain the previously mentioned bebop revolution led by Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie. The event was not lost upon the young man from Detroit, for he would reflect the language of that idiom throughout his career. Tal Fallow is yet another Christian devotee. A sign painter by trade, he was so entranced by Charlie's Benny Goodman recordings that he traded his paintbrush for a six-string and taught himself to play by listening to the records over and over. He recorded with Buddy deFranco, Arte Shaw and Red Norvo before going solo in the Fifties when a series of albums including This Is Tal Fartow', The Tal Fariow Album' and 'Autumn In New York' established him as one of the all-time greats. One man clearly ahead of his time was Herb Ellis. He was already an accomplished guitarist when he enrolled in North Texas State University in the late Thirties to major in music but as they did not yet have a guitar course he was forced to switch to string bass. While there, hemetreedmanJimmyGiuffre and heard Charlie Christian for the first time, a combination of events that led him to jazz. A later tribute album, Thank You, Charlie Christian', showed how well he had learned from the master. Belgian-bom Django Reinhardt, whose career flourished between the wars, is unusual in favouring the acoustic guitar, but his performances with violinist Stephane Grappelli in the legendary Quintette du Hot Club de France saw them battle with their abilities, not their volume. By 1950 he was starting to experiment with amplification, but that adventure would be cut short by his death from a brain haemorrhage three years later. Charlie Byrd made his name after travelling to South America in 1962 and bringing back the local music. The recording of 'Jazz Samba' made with saxophonist Stan Getz earned him both fame and a little fortune: we catch him here a few years earlier in his career. He also worked with Barney Kessel and Herb Ellis, both also featured, as the Great Guitars. Jimmy Raney had worked with Stan Getz a decade earlier, the years from 1951 to 1954 seeing him establish himself as one of the hottest six-string properties around. We sample him solo from a couple of years later. Another lesser-known but equally gifted individual is Mundell Lowe, who cut his teeth with hillbilly bands in his native Mississippi before moving to New Orleans and, after war service, New York. He is known for his melodic single-string work. The previously mentioned Barney Kessel used jazz as a springboard to the mainstream. He became one of the most recorded musicians in history, playing on countless pop, movie and TV sessions until his death in 2004. Whether legendary names like Christian and Montgomery or more obscure but supremely talented individuals such as Chuck Wayne, Dave Barbour or Allan Reuss, the talent showcased here is undeniable. Count Basie may not have approved... but we do!
