Featured are the great blues singer Joe Turner and the strong singer and altoist Eddie "Cleanhead" Vinson, along with the Count Basie Orchestra. "Just a Dream," "Everyday I Have the Blues," "Cherry Red" and "Stormy Monday" receive very spirited renditions, as do some newer blues. Since all of the principals are no longer with us, Norman Granz deserves special thanks for organizing this special session.CD Universe KANSAS CITY SHOUT is a grab bag of surprises. For starters, legendary blues shouter Big Joe Turner is on board. Though the instrumentation and arrangements swing with the Count's classic feel, Turner's textured, earthy vocals on cuts like "Everyday I Have The Blues" and "Stormy Monday" contribute a certain irresistible down-and-dirtiness to this set. Though by the '80s (when this session was recorded) Turner wasn't quite the powerhouse he'd been in the '40s, his raw and rugged presence is unmistakable. Elsewhere, Eddie "Cleanhead" Vinson brings his alto sax and vocals to "Cherry Red" and "Just A Dream In My Mind," complementing the Turner performances. Occasionally, the track list switches from the 19-piece ensemble (with Basie himself on the 88's, of course) to smaller configurations, such as the trio and quartet formats. In both formats, the musicians play with characteristic precision and a deep bluesy inflection, with the smaller groups highlighting Basie's rhythmic, economical piano work. Fans of Big Joe Turner and the Count's more "down home" material should enjoy this one immensely.amazon.com user review I have never writen a review before but this is one of my favorite album's of all time and definetly my favorite Count Basie album. First, I am such a huge Count Basie fan that I named my dog Basie. I love jazz and my favorite musicians, along with Basie are Charlie Parker and Cannonball Adderley. What I like about this album is that it gets down and dirty with the Blues, and really evokes emotion. Williams and Turner are great and they sang in a way you would expect them to sing in a club. Not the over produced, main stream pronunciation you may find on other albums. Also the Basie Band sounds great - very tight with a range of songs from slow to fast blues. My favorite parts of the album are the solo's. Sometimes it seems saxaphone soloist are paid by the note, but here you have well constructed solo's that reach a electic crescendo. The recoriding quality is outstanding.
