Review by Scott Yanow
This is a rather unusual and interesting CD. Pianist McCoy Tyner has recorded many tributes to his former boss John Coltrane but in this particular situation he often plays a back seat to the tenors of Pharoah Sanders and/or David Murray. Murray and Sanders actually only meet up on Murray's "Trane" (with plenty of fireworks); otherwise these are quartet performances with bassist Cecil McBee and drummer Roy Haynes, and in one case ("Lazy Bird") a trio showcase for Tyner. Pharoah often sounds close to Coltrane while Murray as usual resembles no one but himself. In addition to "Trane," other highlights include "Naima," "The Promise" and "I Want To Talk About You."
