The sound is warm with both instruments mixed evenly, and both have their own presence. The sound of the piano is percussive without any "tinniness", and the bass sound is clean and bold sounding. These tracks, by this fine duo, were recorded in 1974, in Holland, at Het Hocht. This release contains over eighteen minutes of previously unreleased music-three tracks a bit over six minutes each, and one track slightly over half a minute long. A number of tunes are by well known composers/musicians - Harold Arlen, Dave Brubeck, Charlie Parker, and Sonny Rollins, Miles Davis, and others. There is one track each from Kenny Drew and NHOP. The playing ranges from intense to professional playfulness. But at all times both musicians are playing at the highest level of commitment-both to the music and to each other. That's what sets this release apart from other duo recordings. Even the previous two albums that Drew and NHOP released, recorded in the studio,are not up to this level of playing. The studio releases,as good as they were, suffered from a slight "sameness" in the sound. Here, the duo manage to eject some life into these tunes and the arrangements. For those who like jazz piano or double bass,or both,especially in this format-give this a listen. There is a subtly to their playing that only comes from years of playing by these two (late) masters of their respective instruments. Drew's piano sound never strayed to far from a blues foundation, which gave his playing real life. NHOP's bass sound and immaculate time-keeping simply has to be heard to be appreciated. Together their talents bring new life to these tracks, no matter if the tempo is slow or upbeat.
