An audacious punky thrash momentum on ‘Blackout’ complete with bizarre scatting and hyperactive beats competes for our best attention although the ensemble sound settles into more conventional post-bop later and even becomes surprisingly melodic, Haudrechy fashioning striking themes played on saxophone or a firm momentum emerging from a thicker ensemble sound.Mostly the leader’s own compositions partly inspired by the 1970s and 80s “dark wave” style, a Gothy-variant on New Wave popular in Germany and France plus an airy cover of dance act MGMT’s ‘Time to Pretend’, overall it’s an odd sometimes eccentric confection, the brassy beginning of ‘The Search’ a euphoric world away from the album’s more anarchic proggy moments.Recorded in a Toulouse studio in May this year Dark Wave feels like the work of a bunch of musicians who haven’t quite found a consensus sound although there are plenty of moments where sparks threaten to fly.
