famously said, and judging by Sun Ra's ever-growing stature in the music, it would seem that many have come to agree with this assertion. Less certain, of course, is exactly what Sun Ra is (or was), but at the very least the mixture includes parts visionary, iconoclastic, musical, futuristic, mystic, despotic, and philosophical. That he managed to attract and retain the talent he did, for the sheer number of years he did, certainly evokes grandeur not only in the realm of notes and tones but in the influence he had upon musicians' lives. As the accounts go, there was something in Sun Ra that was vibrational (add that to the above list) affecting those who were ready and willing to listen, and affecting them to the very core. While John Gilmore may be the most eminent, many, many more traveled the spaceways during Sun Ra's tenure on this mortal coil, from the well known (Don Cherry, Julian Priester) to the criminally less known (Clifford Jarvis, Pat Patrick, and June Tyson to name but a few). So what happens when the man leaves the planet, and the denizens of the Arkestra are left behind? Implosion or, as one might expect, someone picks up and carries on. The latter responsibility fell to longtime reed player and composer in his own right, Marshall Allen, who performed as a member of the Arkestra from the very beginning and who also cut recordings with the likes of James Moody in the late 40s and Paul Bley during the ESP heyday. True to Sun Ra's methodology, Allen has formed the current incarnation of the Arkestra into an exploratory and repertory ensemble, performing new, self-penned compositions as well as highlights from the extensive Saturn backlogs and the obligatory tribute to Walt Disney. Thus the Arkestra continues and is caught here in an expectedly driven performance at the Uncool Festival in Poschiavo, Switzerlanda€”and really, what could be more uncool than performing in galactic gear nearly 50 years after the initial donning? What is most exciting about this performance is not the repertory aspect of the Arkestraa€”although no self-respecting Sun Ra fan will ever tire of another version of "We travel the Spaceways" a€”but instead, Allen's newer contributions. As John Szwed, in typically lucid liner notes, suggests, there is something Ellingtonian about Allen's contributions, hinting toward the "richness of Duke's great band". While the comparison is apt, the sound is oftentimes closer in feeling to Duke's greatest apprentice, Mingus, in full Black Saint and the Sinner Lady mode. Mingus would never have employed something as spacey as the EVIa€”Electronic Valve Instrumenta€”to tap into the higher planetary frequencies, but there are striking moments throughout the Allen pieces that recall the scope of Mingus' greatest large-scale works. Of the eleven tracks on the disc, "Light and Darkness/Theme for Sunny Ray" (a fractured, strutting piece with Allen on EVI) and "Pulsar" (in essence, a huge crescendo/decrescendo with a wonderfully evocative and understated guitar contribution from D. Hotep) are the most satisfying. The fourteen-member strong Arkestra is heard in all their diverse glory best on these pieces, whether in tight unison or in intricate group interplay. Always providing adequate space for each other while still bringing the heat when necessary, the members of the Arkestra have managed to walk that fine line between under- and over-playing more effectively than any number of free jazz big band institutions. Few groups could pull of something as strangely familiar as "Blue Intergalactic" without stepping on each other's toes. There are, as is often the case, some duds, and at this point the vocals seem more and more superfluous. "Blue Sun", although probably a meaningful tribute for the band members themselves to their boss, is little more than simple, almost banal doodling only further exposed by platitudes of the "Today I saw a Blue Sun. I've never seen such beauty as a Blue Sun in the sky" type. "In-B-Tween/Mr. Mystery" is rather too long, although buoyed by a magnificent solo from Allen on alto, and "When You Wish Upon a Star" is a bit of a car wreck, although of a peculiarly compelling variety, again with Allen in paint-peeling, note-slurring mode. But, occasionally sub-par Arkestra is better than so much else that these moments are easily overlooked. After the Uncool Festival, the Arkestra traveled to Russia to play for and set up a cultural exchange with the Tuvan community. The photos from this expedition, with Allen and others hauling themselves through the mountains in the dead center of Asia, are as surreal as anything else the Arkestra has done. It's one thing to talk about "Voices from OuterSpace" and an entirely different thing to commit one's life to listening and responding to those voices.
