Доп. информация:
Recorded at "Judson Hall", NYC, in October 19, 1966
Об альбоме (сборнике)n 1966, Noah recorded his first two albums as a leader for the ESP-Disk label. For his second record, Noah Howard at Judson Hall, the quartet is augmented by the addition of pianist Dave Burrell and Cellist Catherine Norris. Both of these records are also noteworthy for being two recording sessions that featured British trumpeter Ric Colbeck. Colebeck’s only other recorded appearances came on The Sun is Coming Up, his lone album as a leader, and on a Burrell led session for BYG/Actuel. Of the two records that Howard did for ESP, I tend to gravitate more towards the Judson Hall release.“This Place Called Earth”, the first of two eighteen minute songs, starts things off with Howard’s sax working along side both string players. Colbeck follows this with a short solo that leads into an extended piano solo from Burrell. His playing on this recording is rather restrained and not quite as balls-out-crazy as some of his later BYG material tended to get. The b-side, “Homage to Coltrane”, follows a pretty similar path. The strings start it off with both players using bows in an extended duo setting. Burrell than introduces a repetitive two-note piano line that anchors the song while Colbeck takes an extended solo. After about ten minutes, Howard appears and the intensity starts to increase. This is probably the most “out there” portion of an overall recording that can be relatively accessible for most jazz followers. Howard is one of those players that knows holding back is just as important as letting it all out. A little extreme, but never fully over-the-top. Some quality playing, in a setting that let’s all of the performers have their moment in the sun.
