Harmonic Disorder, his new CD on Thirsty Ear starts off with a ballad (“There Will Never Be Another You”) and continues with the title tune, “Someday My Prince Will Come,” and a set of original compositions. Matthew maintains that “I feel completely comfortable within this trio and feel the freedom to be a hundred percent myself.” With reference to the two standards, he maintains that “we were able to take these melodic compositions and transform them into our own idiom.” Shipp views the date as “a continuation of the great piano trio tradition — artists such as Bud Powell, Bill Evans, and Ahmed Jamal — but played with our own language and in our own very unique way.” That about sums it up! This CD affords a rhythmic, taut, dynamic, adventurous listening experience that will be appreciated by fans of 21st- century improvisational jazz. Shipp has a long history of recording with Thirsty Ear — he is director of its Blue Series — and has long been compared with Cecil Taylor, but their styles are distinct, and Shipp is three decades younger.
