Recorded January 16, 17 and 18 1999 at Studio La Buissonne, Pernes Les Fontaines, France.
Об альбоме"Based on long time collaboration between Doneda (sax) and Zbinden (guitar), this trio with harpplayer Héléne Breschand continues exploring wonderful soundscapes. The mix of the extraordinary harp -- unplugged -- with the really heavy stuff of the electric guitar gives kind of special fragility and a new dimension to every instrument."
Об альбоме (~ Ken Waxman)Don't be frightened by the instrumentation. Although in other hands a program of harp, saxophone and guitar instrumentals might be viewed as a short cut to velvety boredom, Breschand and Doneda from France and Zbinden from Switzerland manage to use their equipment in a much more original way. "Espace Champs," for instance, which starts off as a moody pastoral piece, soon develops all sorts of sharp edges with saxophone peeps, harp string twangs and electric guitar buzzesElsewhere, as in "Octogone," the three seem to revel in the metalic sounds that can result from their instruments, with even the usually pastoral harp attacked like a powerful, many-stringed guitar. It's as if a 18th Century chamber orchestra in powdered wigs and ruffs suddenly pulled out Kiss masks and began transmitting heavy metal chords. Then there's "Stase," the longest piece, which seems most concerned with pure sound. Doneda comes out with short bursts of bird-like notes, while the other two produce a textural, rhythmic background. The sound map created is so varied, in fact, that it often seems as if the trio has gained extra members on drums, bass and other horns. This doubling and redoubling of the sound goes on for more than 27 minutes until the whole thing abruptly fades away.
Conventional ambient or new age or smooth jazz fans would be wise to stay away from this disc. But improv followers interested in seeing what can be done with this instrumental combination will be well satisfied.
Об альбоме (by François Couture)Five improvs, ranging from 5 to 27 minutes. In each one of them, the harp brings in an unusual soft touch in these improvisational contexts. But beware: Breschand can get mad, as in "Octogone" where the harp looses its feminine grace for a couple of minutes. Zbinden's guitar creates constant tension. Heavy in distortion, it can be screaming and screeching (think of Jean-Marc Monterra) or more discrete while it weaves electric textures à la Viennese, close to the art of Burkhard Stangl or Martin Siewert. Between these two instruments, Doneda's soprano sax acts like a bridge going from one to the other, linking these two personalities with his sounds, at times very noisy, more lyrical the next minute.
L'Intense has the panache of a great improvised music record. Although assuming a rather harsh form to the untrained ear, this music will captivate the open-minded listener. A truly fantastic experience on a terra improvisa.
Об альбоме (~ Richard Cochrane)......Breschand takes the traditional sound of the instrument as her starting-point rather than as something to be annihilated, playing "straight" for most of this disk. One can't say the same for Doneda, a player who becomes more impressive with every release, notwithstanding some rather negative things this writer had to say about his Anatomie des Clefs a year ago. The saxophonist has an extreme approach to his instrument, and often it's hard to tell what is hard-won technique and what is accident, but his ability to work in small-group settings is extraordinary.
Here, his gargling, strangulated voice is pitched between Breschand's thoughtful atonalities on the one hand and the slightly muffled roar of Zbinden's axe on the other. Zbinden plays some smart stuff, but it's his tendency to shroud it in a haze of distortion which is initially off-putting but ultimately rather satisfying. He becomes something of a force of nature, a lightening-storm backdrop to the strange meeting of Breschand and Doneda.
Indeed, it's surprising that these three have anything to say to one another at all, but they collaborate with considerable verve. Sometimes the easy option is taken -- "Espace Champs" is an extended piece of mood-music which sounds like it came straight off the score to some Hollywood sci-fi movie -- but even then the results are very pleasant. When the group really gets going, Doneda comes on like Evan Parker, what with his circular breathing and complicated timbral distortions, pushing the later further than Parker ever has, which is no slur on Parker and which is, indeed, part of the reason why Doneda can be hit-and-miss.
At those times, when Doneda's really hitting, Breschand plays almost like a double bass and Zbinden like a drummer; it's hard to explain how, exactly, but this trio of strange bedfellows turns into a free jazz trio and really cooks it up. One couldn't expect them to do it all the time, naturally, especially since this group isn't a jazz trio and their music superficially has a great deal in common with the refried high Modernism of Beins/Wastell/Davies. Yet there it is: the second half of "Temps Nodal" is a blistering fireball of pure New York loft preacher-man wailing, or rather a simulacrum of it, blasted into the 21st century and the centre of postmodernism with all its energy and complexity very much intact. This is a patchy record, but the poor patches are good, and the good patches are truly excellent.
