Jean-François knew his instrument so well that he was able to assert his strong personality so quickly that it wasn’t always easy to adapt to his idea of tempo – it could be fragmented, loosely defined, deliberately variable or merely hinted at. His premature death makes one suspect that he never fully realised the importance of his personal contribution to music, nor the admiration we all felt for him. (Daniel Humair)
