Основу оркестра составили братья: Frank Assunto (trumpet, 1932–1974) и Fred Assunto (trombone, 1929–1966), а также их отец - Papa Jac Assunto (trombone and banjo).      "Герцоги диксиленда" (если перевести точнее — "Элита диксиленда") возродили интерес к традиционному джазу на юге США, а благодаря хорошей рекламе (гастроли, пластинки, фильмы, видеоклипы) — и во всей стране. В 1953–57 гг. музыканты постоянно работали в новоорлеанских клубах и стали достопримечательностью города. В ноябре 1957 года, небольшой фирмой Audio Fidelity была выпущена первая стереофоническая пластинка, на первой стороне которой были записаны Dukes of Dixieland.
