A pupil of the famed Lorenzo Tio, Jr., his lineage shares a common thread with such illustrious New Orleans reed players as Johnny Dodds, Albert Nicholas, Jimmie Noone and Barney Bigard, all of whom learned their craft from a member of the Tio family.Of course, Burbank is not as well known at these four men, but that is in large measure due to his having stayed in New Orleans when the jazz focus shifted to Chicago and New York. He served in the Navy during World War II and continued to work in and around New Orleans in the post-war years, mostly with cornetist Dee Dee Pierce and drummers Albert Jiles and Paul Barbarin. In 1945, Burbank made his recording debut, for Bill Russell's American Music label, with Wooden Joe Nicholas and the Original Creole Stompers (some of these performances can be found on "A Night at Artesian Hall" -Storyville SLP-204). Other recordings followed, but all were done locally. Although he eventually took his music far afield, even to Europe and Australia, it was not until May of 1954 that Albert Burbank ventured beyond the borders of his ho- met own as a musician. The trip took him to San Francisco's Club Hangover, where he spent the summer as a member of trombonist Kid Ory's Creole Jazz Band. The recordings in this album stem from this extended engagement, and, although Burbank's official role here was that of a sideman (he was, indeed, the eternal sideman), I think you will agree that he deserves to have these selections released under his name.Kid Ory's name first graced a record in 1922, when the obscure Nordskog label released his Ory's Creole Trombone, a tune he would later turn into a classic as a member of Louis Armstrong's Hot Five. Recorded in Los Angeles, this rare side also features the bassist who is heard on this album, Ed Garland, who had come to California as a member of King Oliver's Creole Jazz Band. Drummer Minor Hall is another Oliver alumnus while trumpeter Alvin Alcorn and pianist Don Ewell were relative youngsters at the time of the Club Hangover gig, having been born in 1912 and 1918, respectively.Chris Albertson Contributing Editor to Stereo Review
