By choosing to produce this original work himself, he carefully created his ideal recording conditions, surrounding himself with musicians he knows by heart after touring together for two years, and setting a high bar from the start. By composing the entirety of the 13 pieces in this album—save a cover of Träumerei, from Kinderszenen, Op. 15 by Robert Schumann—the young piano prodigy shows himself to be one of the leading musicians of his generation, an adept composer who places melody at the center of it all, and an improviser and bandleader with a captivating personality who masters the codes, elevates the discourse, absorbs influences and anchors his music in a certain idea of lyricism. “This album is me here and now, unfiltered, with my joys, my sorrows, my longings, my fantasies, my memories and my dreams, my innocence and my ardor. The two sensational musicians who accompany me [Chris Jennings, double bass, and Nicolas Charlier, drums] are amazing but, above all, I love them as human beings, I love their madness, their idiosyncrasies… All three of us come from different countries and cultures, but we each find a perfect fit in this ideal, evolving trio configuration; I give an impulse in the direction that we three take with our personal baggage.” "Fireflies" illustrates well the duality that exists in the compositions presented by Thomas Enhco: an exploration of light and dark. The songs evoke night trains (Train de Nuit), ghosts (You're Just a Ghost) and enchanting deserts (Wadi Rum), but in the recesses of its somber and melancholic facets the music encloses luminous, ample melodies. Enveloped in a dreamlike veil, it blazes with its own mystery. “Fireflies: lanterns in the night; hidden, fleeting, fragile and precious lights. They brought to my mind an imaginary, wondrous, disturbing world… As I wrote and recorded this album, I completely felt like a character in that world, living each story. I feel the same on stage: as if I’m in another universe, a fantasy world with no emotional boundaries. I bare my soul, but through a different identity, like a storyteller or a clown.” There lies the greatness of this album: the powerful narrative, the bare honesty of the musicians, the force of their consuming passion and the intensity of their performance. The art of the trio emerges in full splendor. The musical and human empathy that connects the three protagonists of this adventure is more than present: it is palpable. Upon hearing these skillfully crafted compositions, powerfully melodic themes and dense discourse, one wonders what could have so affected such a young artist to inspire this much depth and maturity.
