1988 - Claude's Late MorningBy the second Gramavision release, “Claude’s Late Morning,” in 1988, Previte had grown tired of the two horn front line and embarked on an ambitious, (some say crazy) project with an outcast instrumentation, including guitarist Bill Frisell, Josh Dubin on pedal steel, Wayne Horvitz on hammond, Ray Anderson on tuba and trombone, Guy Klucevsek on accordion, Carol Emmanuel on Harp, and two other drummers (Joey Baron, and Jim Mussen on electronic drum pads).

1990 - Empty SuitsPrevite’s third record for Gramavision was a two guitar, keyboard, vocal, sampling, and trombone brew called “Empty Suits.” This CD started his relationship with the great engineer Joe Ferla, and marks a period when Previte’s interest in musicians like Salif Keita and King Sunny Adé (with tunes like, “The King So Far”) was at its zenith. Jazziz—“Empty Suits takes you someplace new, with jazz as the compass and the whole of music as a map. In short, another fine and beautiful mess from Previte.”
The tune “Break the Cups” alone is worth the price, with an outrageous vocal by Roberta Baum, who had worked with Ornette Coleman for awhile.

1991 - Music of the Moscow CircusIn 1992 the Moscow Circus tracked Previte down on tour and commissioned him to create all the music for their new season, which opened on Broadway at the Gershwin Theater. This music became the fourth Gramavision release, “Music of the Moscow Circus.” Written to accompany the various circus acts, this CD reads like a soundtrack for an aerial ballet, with everything from a classically inspired piano piece to a shredding electronic noisefest.

1991 - Weather Clear, Track FastWhile signed to Gramavision Previte also began to record for the German label Enja. There were three records in which he returned to a horn front line (but this time four of them). The first of these “racetrack records,” released in 1991, was titled after the name of the band, “Weather Clear, Track Fast.” A truly all-star CD, it featured some of the heaviest “young lions” at the time—Don Byron, Graham Haynes, Robin Eubanks, Marty Ehrlich, Anthony Cox, and Anthony Davis (who later went on to compose the Opera “X”). A more fleshed out version of the earlier records, this is a very compositionally driven CD.

1996 - Too Close to the Pole“Too Close To The Pole” was the final Weather Clear, Track Fast recording and in it Previte went even further along an almost choral/African direction, assembling a completely different band of musicians who at that time were very new to the New York scene, but who quickly became indispensable to it—musicians like Jamie Saft, Cuong Vu and Andy Laster . The CD, recorded in Germany, was released in 1996, and is the culmination of his writing with that orchestration. Previte has not written for a large front line since.
