Comprised of Oliver Blaylock on violin, Douglas Francisco on dobro, Brian Hullfish on cello, and Paul Wright on guitar, The Missing Parts incorporate a multitude of musical influences into their music. Listeners have noted strains of everything from Sufi and Roma music, to classical, metal, blues, jazz, tango, flamenco, and spaghetti western; but all the compositions on Folk Music From an Undiscovered Country, ultimately, remain original.The title, Folk Music From an Undiscovered Country, has a story behind it. The band was playing music on the street in Boulder, Colorado, when a man and his daughter stopped to listen. Later, he bought a cd and chatted awhile. A few days went by and the man sent a message saying, “As we walked up, my daughter said to me 'I can't figure out what kind of music they're playing.' After listening to the CD, I still can't figure it out. I really like that I can't figure it out. And I like the music a lot. Really rich and well-developed. How about calling it 'folk music from an undiscovered country?'” How about it? Well, The Missing Parts wholeheartedly agreed. Perhaps, when all is said and done, that's the best and simplest way to describe this music.All 16 tracks were recorded over the course of two weekends in the Fall of 2009, live in the studio, as the band wanted to retain a live feel and capture, not a slick overproduced “product”, but the enthusiasm and spontaneity the tunes deserve, the proper environment for them to thrive. Some songs, Mate, for instance, leave a great deal of room for improvisation, while others, such as Pirate Metal, are played more “by the book.”The Missing Parts could also be described as a sort of “landscape music.” By that, I mean Folk Music From an Undiscovered Country conjures a landscape in a listener's mind - it's “music as transportation device.” Much like soundtrack music (think more “Once Upon a Time In the West” and less “The Big Chill”), this is music that establishes not just a mood, but a terrain.
