Jean-Baptiste Illinois Jacquet

Вырос в Хьюстоне в музыкальной семье, в детстве играл на ударных, трубе и кларнете. Дебютировал как альт-саксофонист, но в 1941 Лайонел Хэмптон уговорил его перейти на тенор и взял в свой оркестр. В 1943 собрал первую группу (в нее вошел молодой контрабасист Чарльз Мингус), но параллельно играл в оркестрах Кэба Кэллауэя (1943–44), Каунта Бэйси (1945–46, стал соавтором темы Robbins Nest) и записывал пластинки с Беном Уэбстером, Джином Крупой, Джо Ньюменом, Бадди Ричем, Диззи Гиллеспи и другими. В 50–60-е годы играл в симфонических оркестрах Нью-Йорка на фаготе и выступал с разными составами в антрепризе Нормана Грэнца Jazz At The Philharmonic (однажды собрал группу саксофонов — "Великая пятерка", в которую кроме него вошли Коулмен Хокинс, Бен Уэбстер, Лестер Янг и Дон Байес). Играл с Милтом Бакнером (1966–72) и Уальдом Билл Дэвисом (1972–77), но чаще всего с Лайонелом Хэмптоном, которого во время болезни заменил на посту руководителя биг-бэнда. В 1985 собрал собственный оркестр, исполнявший свинг в духе Каунта Бэйси.
