Antibes-Juan les Pins 1980 : It's Jazz International Festival, it's pine trees, it's ever blue sea, it's beautiful sun, it's "Pirates" beach where all the musicians, critics, aficionados and bathing beauties meet...
That night, 24th of July, was exclusively dedicated to this musical style, so-called BEBOP. René Urtreger had said to me " ... the most beautiful music in the world ... This word only gives a weak measure to this revolution rhythmic and harmonic ... All contemporary musicians are under this influence, no matter their style ..."
During this evening, Johnny Griffin (quartet) and Art Blakey (onzetet) played and illustrated this ethic, in the most "hard" way.
Before them, René Urtreger quintet had offered a performance, whose global sound as well as individual's were worthwhile. These accomplices had gone through all dreams, were tempted by all kinds of attempts and temptations, with uncontested success. Jean-François Jenny-Clark and also Aldo Romano get along together, hustling conformity. Jean-Louis Chautemps enjoys the feast. Young Eric Le Lann, who appears in front of a large audience for the first time, proves René did the good choice.
My feelings during this open air concert added to the audition, one month later of the tape, done without any studio tricks or added effects, with inherent risks and perils of live-recording, are dythyrambic.
