Брал частные уроки. Играл во многих знаменитых оркестрах — у Лайонела Хэмптона (1943), Билли Экстайна, Лаки Миллиндера, Каунта Бэйси (1944–45), Бойда Рэйбёрна, Диззи Гиллеспи (1946–47). В 1948 выступал на фестивале в Ницце со своим биг-бэндом. В 1950 работал в оркестре Флетчера Хендерсона, в 1951 ненадолго присоединился к биг-бэнду Каунта Бэйси. Записывался со многим знаменитыми музыкантами — с Оскаром Петтифордом, Хорасом Силвером, Стэном Кентоном, Джей Джей Джонсоном. Лучшие записи: Walkin’ и Blue ‘N’ Boogie (с Артом Блэйки). В конце 50-х и в 60-е годы жил в Европе (с перерывами), а в 70-е годы поселился на небольшой ферме в штате Мичиган и прекратил выступления.
