Рос в музыкальной семье, с семи лет играл на фортепиано, в школе осваивал кларнет и саксофон. В 1942–44 работал в оркестре вокалиста и барабанщика Тайни Брэдшоу, некоторое время играл вместе с Чарли Паркером и Диззи Гиллеспи в бэнде Билли Экстайна, вошел в группу Кенни Кларка Bebop Boys, а в 1945–46 — в ансамбль Гиллеспи, в котором исполнил запоминающиеся соло в Oop Bop Sh’Bam и That’s Earl, Brother.
