Рос в обеспеченной семье, трубу освоил под руководством отца и соседа-музыканта. В 1945 поступил в музыкальную школу, через четыре года — в Государственный колледж штата Мэриленд. В 1949 его "заметил" Диззи Гиллеспи, а в следующем году Браун уже играл в Филадельфии с Джей Джей Джонсоном, Максом Роучем, Фэтсом Наварро. Год провел в больнице после тяжелой автокатастрофы, в 1952–53 вошел в группу ритм-энд-блюза, затем, по рекомендации Тэда Дамерона, присоединился к биг-бэнду Лайонела Хэмптона. Стал героем дня, выступив в 1954 в клубе Birdland в квинтете Арта Блэйки. В марте того же года вместе с Максом Роучем собрал свой квинтет, который просуществовал вплоть до гибели Брауна в автокатастрофе по дороге из Филадельфии в Чикаго.
