The selections are The Panther, Tangerine, More Than You Know, Gingerbread Boy, and Come Rain Or Come Shine. Total playing time is 72:50. The timing of this series invites comparison to the famous Village Vanguard recording. The playing on the Village Vanguard recording is a little more cogent and reaches greater heights in my opinion. But the Keystone recording shows a crew that is in a decidedly casual mode, willing to explore, throw in some change-ups, and expand on the moment. The comfort they have with each other is evident. The tracks are long (11 to 19 minutes), and there is plenty of opportunity to hear not only Gordon, but Cables and Reid taking extended solos. There is an emphasis on mid-tempo, swinging, sort of funky playing (although there are mid-tune tempo changes), which seems to be the best groove this particular group has and provides a platform for Dexter's lyricism. But you can still hear the group burn it up on Tangerine and Gingerbread Boy. The tracks are well assembled and well paced. One can listen to one or two discs in this series without feeling listening fatigue. Dexter's tone and phrasing are still strong, not showing the physical decline that would become evident in the period following these recordings. This recording gets four rather than five stars because of a little excessive looseness and inconsistent miking and recording quality. But hey, it's a live recording and you take the good with the bad. -- art&science
