Translate this into music and you've got liquid sounds: an undercurrent of bass, a light beat on drums ... the melody streaming from piano, suddenly darting away, to skip from guitar to sax. A chorus or so of lucid ensemble sound ... then cascading into the tonal current, solo splashes of clarinet or flute. And always a modern feel, buoyant rhythm, a clear melodic line. Paul Smith creates this music, not while contemplating Niagara Falls or listening to the drip of a faucet for inspiration, but deliberately, like a scientist or alchemist. He begins by carefully assembling a set of tunes. Some are standards, some he writes himself. He gives a fresh arrangement to the notes in each song, showing as he does his familiarity with the inventions of cool jazz, his acquaintance with the baroque and rococo patterns of times past. Then Mr. Smith handpicks his musicians, choosing each for his skill as a soloist and ability as a good team player. In conclusion, crisp performances from all concerned. Miraculously, all this careful planning produces music that is wonderfully light and relaxed - the liquid sounds that are welcome refreshment the first time heard, and every time thereafter.
