Liner notesPaul Smith makes very good background music for a martini. But you'd be out of your discriminating skull if you let it go at that. Forget the drink. Listen. Paul Smith may be playing more and better piano than you've ever heard in your life. And martinis you can get anytime.
To say that Paul Smith sits head and shoulders above most pianists is to acknowledge the dual truths that (1) he is a husky 6'4" and looks like he should be moving pianos instead of playing them, and (2) although he doesn't move pianos he moves people-with an exciting piano style, incredible technique, impeccable taste, and an extraordinary finger-tip sense of humor. (He also moves writers-to superlatives).
This album - "Brazilian Detour"- is the most direct route to what's new in the world of big popular piano. Paul takes the new, worldly, popular idiom of the bossa nova, translates it from its more common instrumental voice-the guitar-into a strong piano sound, and then travels a double road to the final statement. He takes a handful of familiar bossa nova tunes and gives them his Yankee jazz accent, then takes an equal number of non-Brazilian standards and originals and reverses his field. The result is a fresh and ear-grabbing blend of the two musics, proof again that Paul is a swinging something else. Or as Hentoff Wadsworth Longfellow once exclaimed, "Smith, a mighty man is he!"
When he isn't making records, Paul is busy leading three other lives. He is an in-person performer with a past, present, and future at The Hunting Horn, a sumptuous eating-drinking-and-music-listening hangout in the hills of Palos Verdes, a hunk of swank Los Angeles that juts out into the Pacific and makes life worth living. Which is precisely where Paul lives his worthwhile private life. A few blocks from the office, so to speak. There, in a lovely modern home overlooking that same Pacific, Paul is head man to a family that includes wife Annette (formerly Annette Warren, singer with the Harry James band), a brood of three boys and one girl, and a new forty-foot power cruiser that's moored down the beach a piece.
Oh, one thing more. Not only is the talented and omnipresent bassist, Wilford Middlebrook, contributing to the current cause, but there's a whole orchestra-from fiddle section to boo-bams. Yes, siree. It's class the whole way on Paul Smith's "Brazilian Detour!'
A little traveling music, professor...
