Though he played as a showroom saxophonist through the years -- he can be spotted on the bandstand in photographs and footage from the Rat Pack's days at the Sands -- his real passion was in composing and arranging, said Dan Skea of the Las Vegas Jazz Society. "He was very thorough and particular, a very deliberate, careful arranger," Skea said of past big-band concerts by the Nevada Jazz Orchestra that featured Romero's works. Romero's music was heard in settings both large and small. He helmed an eight-piece Latin-Jazz Group but also had his music played by a symphony orchestra in his native El Paso, Texas. He won awards from the National Association of Jazz Educators and the Lake Tahoe Symphony Association. In recent years, Romero devoted much of his time to transcribing and promoting his music for use by student jazz bands and orchestras. His last two commissioned compositions were played in Phoenix on June 6 by the Young Sounds of Arizona. Romero first came to Las Vegas in 1955 to play in the Flamingo Hotel Orchestra and played the following year in Garwood Van's band at the New Frontier. He toured with the Woody Herman Band in 1964 and 1965, and he arranged some music for the band as well. In May 1994, he composed and conducted a tribute piece written for a Woody Herman festival at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. He also performed or arranged music for Gene Krupa, Benny Goodman, Maynard Ferguson and Stan Kenton. All-Music Guide, an Internet music encyclopedia, lists two albums by Romero on the Sea Breeze label: "Raoul Romero: Las Vegas Jazz Festival" and "The Music of Raoul Romero." Recently, Romero had been playing showroom engagements at Caesars Palace, said Caesars music director Johnny Haig. Romero called Haig from his hotel room in Mexico shortly before his death Wednesday to confirm rehearsal times for an upcoming Tony Bennett engagement.Romero died of a heart attack in 1999 aged just 64.
