A seriously exciting set of new compositions from Bang On A Can's Cantaloupe Music, this album brings together four works by Julia Wolfe (b. 1958), each penned for multiples of single instruments. Opening piece 'LAD' features nine sets of bagpipes, commencing slowly with the drone created by filling the instruments with air. After several minutes of hypnotic dissonance the piece gives over to a more melodic second part that cascades with multilayered melodicism. Bolder still is 'Dark Full Ride', a percussion suite whose opening seven-and-a-half minutes utilise hi-hats, exclusively. despite the apparently minimal means, it's one of the more thrilling pieces of modern composition you'll encounter all year, and the second part of the piece opens up with thundering full-kit drumming. Next comes 'My Lips From Speaking', a rowdy piece for six pianos based on the riff from an old R&B song, followed by the sublime 'Stronghold', a two-parter for bowed bass. Brilliant material from beginning to end, and a terrific antidote to the more saccharine modern classical output doing the rounds these days.
