It was recorded live in Krakow, Poland in November of 2014. The Chicago all-star, DKV Trio, have been together for many than twenty years with more than a dozen discs under their belts. It is the longest running unity fronted by multi-bandleader/saxist Ken Vandermark and includes the longtime bassist for the now defunct Vandermark 5, Kent Kessler. Although The Thing, another sax/bass/drums trio (from Scandinavia) has been around a bit less (started in 2000), their rigorous touring schedule and more than a dozen discs keeps them in the eye & ear of those in the know. Both trios have played with different guests: Joe McPhee, Joe Morris, Fred Anderson and Neneh Cherry, so they are both game to collaborate with other strong musicians. This is a fully improvised session and what makes both of these trios great is that all of the musicians involved are immensely diverse, drawing from a wealth of experiences and genres. From the gitgo, both trios are burning and the sound is joyous, free, focused, intense and often throttling! Mr. Gustafsson’s ornery baritone sax is at the center of the storm when things kick off but soon all six members swirl and soar together. The music moves organically from mood or groove to the next passage. New DMG helper, Anders Zelinski, mentioned that Ken Vandermark actually gets funky when he plays in DKV and this is indeed what happens in the section section of the first long piece, “Cards”. The ever in-demand drummer, Hamid Drake, shines here, creating a great groove at the center, everyone else joining in to keep that festive spirit going. Things wind down to a somber double bowed bass section, before building back up from playful to exuberant, with Mr. Vandermark switching to some sprawling clarinet as the vibrations intensify to boiling point once more. When the entire band erupts again, it is a most exhilarating sensation! Since the election fiasco last week (11/8/16), there has been a dark mood pervading everyone I have spoken with here and everywhere else. Listening to this music for its 54 minute duration had me smiling and feeling grand the entire time. This is musical/magical/medicine to help us all deal with things and smile through the adversity.
