Frances-Marie Uitti is exhibits her unique skill: a two bow cello attack. With her right hand, she simultaneously uses two bows on her instrument. Several artists employing this technique acknowledge her skilled inventiveness. Known for making new jazz and other post-modern forms since 1972 in collaboration with Andrew Cyrille, Bob Ostertag, John Zorn and others, Dresser is master of the double-bass. The duo improvisations here are stunning and spooky, sizable sonic creations that explore the outer possibilities of both instruments. Sonomondo is an invitation to an entire new world of sound. ~ Tom Schulte, OutsightSonomondo is a duo recording of a seven-part suite by two of the most important contemporary string players in the world, both of whom have developed revolutionary extended techniques. Cellist Frances-Marie Uitti, known primarily in avant garde classical circles, invented a style of playing with two bows in her right hand, allowing her to create four-voiced chords and more when she uses multiphonics and harmonics. Dresser, with outstanding jazz and classical credentials, has also invented a number of new techniques involving microphone placement and the production of harmonics, stops and glissandi. At times he creates unusual effects by striking his strings with a serrated stick. Dresser produces an enormous, powerful sonority, both arco and pizzicato; Uitti has a sweet tone. When playing together they can create a much wider variety of timbres than a conventional cello/bass duo could. But this recording is about more than technique. Uitti and Dresser, both accomplished improvisers, make music that ranges from lyrical to thunderous. Each rises to the challenge of playing with the other with creativity and imaginativeness. Hopefully, this is what low string playing in the new century will be like. ~ Harvey Pekar, JazzTimesTwo stringed instruments, three bows, no waiting, could be the motto for this disc. For the dusky, atmospheric sounds that arise from this session are partially created by Frances-Marie Uitti's unique technique. Using two bows, the New Music luminary is able to create so many voices that the overall effect is of an entire string section playing, rather than just the bass and cello. Not that New York downtowner Mark Dresser is left behind either. Multi-stylistic, with a thorough grounding in both so-called "serious" music as well as jazz, he can get almost as many resonant effects out of his instrument with just bows and fingers as Uitti produces with her double bows. Uitti has used her approach for years to interpret work by such modern composers as John Cage, Iannis Xenakis and Elliott Carter. But considering that all the music is copyright by the two, it would appear that Dresser's improv chops honed with the likes of Anthony Braxton, Mark Helias and Robert Dick transport her that much further into innovation. All and all, though, the most successful union comes on tracks like "Montebell," when the built up tension and slow release creates uncommon textures. Obviously, the CD has an overriding appeal for adventurous string fanciers. ~ Ken Waxman, Jazz Weekly  EAC ReportExact Audio Copy V0.99 prebeta 4 from 23. January 2008EAC extraction logfile from 21.
