Об альбоме (сборнике)Terre Thaemlitz developed the present pieces for and with zeitkratzer. The starting points were Thaemlitz’ releases „means from an end“ and „couture cosmetique“, which present him as an electro acoustic composer with an amazing sensibility for sound and harsh cutting techniques. This is especially evident in the pieces „Sloppy 42nds“ or „Turtleneck“, and moreover, Thamlitz’ filtering techniques are transformed into a complex, nearly surrealistic instrumental sound in „Superbonus“.
Thaemlitz’ provenance as a New York underground DJ is recalled, as well as his political engagement in „Down Home Kami-Sakunobe“ and „Hobo Train“. On this CD you will probably find the most Pop oriented music - including references to dance and house - zeitkratzer has ever released! How true! But that doesn´t mean that Thaemlitz is the most superficial of the three. Not at all! T is one of those artists that make use of the more popular vocabulary to make a point about his other ideas. To give you an idea of the music Ill give a description of a few tracks:
track 1 starts with a rhythmic piece with African influences. "Heya! Sisters! Work, work, work!" is yelled all the time (in tempo). The melody is mellow but also in tempo. It's like a chain gang song but faster. Near the end things start going faster and dissolves.
Track 2 is based by a very slow evolving melody (by a.o. the violin) that is given accents with sparse piano chords.
Track 3 starts with primarily electronic juggling in the higher frequencies. Then a rhythm starts and another basis is formed by long string chords (going up and up and up) over which the electronic sounds do their thing. As you can see the disc contains quite diverse music. I find the result not always very captivating. The rhythms remind me too much of the 80s NY music. As I understand it, this collaboration (between Zeitkratzer and Thaemlitz) was not optimal. At first Thaemlitz declined and in the end he offered a few basis scores and had the orchestra proceed from there. Interestingly Thaemlitz himself defines the project "a continuation of collaborative confusion". Somehow I get the idea that both parties are able to produce interesting music (as is illustrated on their many other releases) but this one didn't quite make it. That's a pity, to say the least. ~ from earlab
