about"An intriguing and very enjoyable album - smart, intelligent, beautifully performed pop-jazz"
(JAZZWISE, UK)Julia Hülsmann is a most remarkable pianist on the contemporary German jazz scene. She has absorbed the tradition and now plays with the building blocks of the music. "She doesn’t just haphazardly throw styles together, like so many players her age. Instead, she remains respectful of the foundation - the melody", wrote DIE WELT, one of Germany’s most influential newspapers. With unerring taste, the pianist combines the most diverse influences: the impressionism of a Ravel, pop music from Sting, the jazz piano tradition from Monk to Hancock and beyond.
Born in Bonn in 1968, Hüsmann studied at the Berlin College of the Arts under such masters as Walter Norris, Aki Takase, and David Friedman, and in New York with Maria Schneider, Richie Beirach, Gil Goldstein, and Jane Ira Bloom. She was a member of Germany’s renowned National Youth Jazz Orchestra under the direction of Peter Herbolzheimer, and made a name for herself as keyboard player in diverse big bands, fusion formations, and pop groups. Her trio, which she formed in 1997, is considered by jazz enthusiasts to be one of the most subtle and distinctive bands in the German capital. For "Scattering Poems" Julia was able to acquire the talents of bassist Marc Muellbauer along with drummer Heinrich Köbberling.Hülsmann met Rebekka Bakken three years ago in New York. She was so impressed by the singer/songwriter’s abilities that she immediately decided to write music for her. Bakken, who was born in 1970 in Oslo Norway, sees herself essentially as a story-teller, as mouthpiece for the text’s message. Her career started in the Norwegian R&B-funk- rock scene. At 25 she moved to New York, where she loaned her voice to a variety of pop bands. In 1998 she began her fruitful collaboration with guitarist Wolfgang Muthspiel. With her unique style, in which the influences of Joni Mitchell and Sidsel Endresen are discernable, her depth of feeling, and her stage presence, Bakken has assured herself a place in the front row of great contemporary jazz vocalists."Scattering Poems" exquisitely combines the talents of these two exceptional artists. They have chosen poems from E.E. Cummings as the basis for the texts. Hülsmann found that Cummings’ poetic pictorial world and his rhythmic feeling for language was already music. Thus, it was no problem to transform these poems into notes. The ten pieces came just as easily; except for the two pieces from Sting and Randy Newman, all are originals composed by the Berlin pianist. Here you have pop with meaning, sympathetic interpretations of the lyrics, and a fantastic intuitive understanding between voice, piano, bass, and drums."Scattering Poems" is jazz from today based on the works of a great poet from the past. The future, however - without a doubt it belongs to Hülsmann and Bakken.

aboutWhen Julia Hülsmann was little, there was a memorable concert on the television. A man was sitting alone at the piano singing wonderful things with a uniquely appalling voice. Julia Hülsmann found it particularly appealing.. And she was especially delighted that, by coincidence, her parents had bought this very man’s sheet music. This encouraged her to sit down at the piano at home and practise for the first time her classical studies. They were of course the songs of Randy Newman. It was the beginning of a long love affair.Julia Hülsmann has herself in the mean time become a well-known pianist. In 2003 she made the recording "Scattering Poems" (ACT 9405-2) with her own trio and Norwegian singer Rebekka Bakken. The release was a special success with public and critics alike. Hülsmann’s compositions set to the poetry of American avant garde poet E.E. Cummings led to the justified recognition of two of the greatest talents from the European jazz scene. With Come Closer, her distinctive homage to Randy Newman, the pianist and arranger, resident in Berlin, shows that she is capable of following up on this debut. It takes a particular feel and understanding for great songs, to make these 30 year old classics viable in the present improvised jazz scene. You must also naturally know the right people. The bassist Marcus Muellbauer and drummer Heinrich Köberling are her long-standing congenial accomplices, little criminals, whose powerful sounds and percussiveness leads to simple oblique things. Chamber jazz but getting down and dirty and with a biting heartfelt mockery is the approach. And thus Randy Newman dances New Orleans gumbo style, or is heard through the more expansive sound of a Fender Rhodes to echo the space jazz of Herbie Hancock.Hülsmann has found a new partner in crime. Anna Lauvergnac, for many years now the singer with the Vienna Art Orchestra, plays every part to perfection. She is the demonic temptress ("You can leave your hat on"), the blues singer ("Let’s burn down the cornfield"), the madly callous daughter ("Mama told me not to come") as well as being the co-writer of the title track of this CD with Hülsmann. "Come Closer"? Certainly you couldn’t come any closer to Randy Newman than this.

about"Berlin pianist Julia Hülsmann’s latest ACT release is a triumphant success "(JAZZWISE, UK)It is difficult to imagine two greater opposites. On the one hand, Jazz, the rough companion who made ends meet in the big cities of the 20th century. On the other, Emily Dickinson, the quiet poet from a Calvinist family, who spent all of her life in the rural community of Amherst, Massachusetts. When Dickinson died at the age of 56 in 1886, jazz had not been born yet. It was no more than a dark premonition, lingering in the dank swamps of the Mississippi delta.Do they go together? Without doubt. But to achieve this union requires a unique talent. Great musicianship. A feel for words, images, and sounds. It requires the ability to invent tunes that linger in the ear and move the heart. Only then can we fully appreciate the brittle, secretive art of Emily Dickinson. Julia Hülsmann, recently described by the WELT AM SONNTAG as "currently the most prominent pianist in the jazz scene", has all the required skills in abundance. All of this has been well known since the release in 2003 of her debut on ACT "Scattering Poems" (ACT 9405-2). This "work of gentle brilliance" (Rolling Stone), which set the poems of American avant-garde poet E.E. Cummings to music, was presented with the German Jazz Award. Similarly the second album, "Come Closer" (ACT 9702-2), a homage to Randy Newman, showed Hülsmann’s skill in merging words, contemporary jazz and pop. The WESTDEUTSCHE ALLGEMEINE ZEITUNG praised the album, by saying that the Berlin pianist succeeded in "celebrating a great songwriter comprehensively while creating a refreshingly unique acoustic adventure. Randy Newman himself hasn’t been heard this pleasurably and effectively for some time, even on his own albums."It’s no surprise that Julia Hülsmann and Randy Newman go together so well. Hülsmann is an excellent songwriter in her own right. One of the accomplishments of "Good Morning Midnight" is that she makes Dickinson feel almost contemporary. Despite the strict formal structure of her verse. Despite the subject matter, that sometimes seems otherworldly in its affinity with abstinence, and tranquil purity of observation. Hülsmann approaches these poems with great respect and care, and yet she finds an abundance of harmonic and rhythmic tension within these works. The intense interplay within her trio with Marc Muellbauer on bass and Heinrich Köbberling on drums, is one of Hülsmann’s most important musical constants. The new partner is the singer Roger Cicero, son of the prematurely deceased pianist Eugen Cicero. It’s a new partnership that goes against the grain. Both Hülsmann’s previous recordings were successful collaborations with female vocalists, Rebekka Bakken and Anna Lauvergnac. This time she uses a man to interpret the verses of a woman.Cicero, who made his name recently as part of the "Soulounge" collective, is a virtuoso in the Kurt Elling tradition. When he first heard Hülsmann’s versions of Dickinson he was convinced: "This is really unusual. I have never sung anything like this." All of this resonates with his vocal chords: Curiosity and doubt, exuberance and introspection, instinct and cultured intelligence. This is a precise transformation of Dickinson’s poems, which celebrate nature and light – while embracing the dark and reflecting the transitory nature of life.Julia Hülsmann has picked ten poems from the enormously rich body of Dickinson’s work for "Good Morning Midnight". Her music intuitively absorbs what is hinted at in the verses. Whether it is the careful probing of the piano solo in "I Cannot See", the insistent 1/8th notes which illustrate the urgency of "Tell Her", or the calm flow that carries the ballad "My River". An unexpected dimension is opened by the subtle electronica provided by Tilman Ehrhorn. A new colour in Julia Hülsmann’s work, as are the warm horn arrangements on "Will There Really Be a Morning" and "Riverman", that are reminiscent of Gil Evans. They are by Hülsmann’s bassist and partner Marc Muellbauer. It was his suggestion to add Nick Drake’s enigmatic song as the only cover on the CD. It fits the conception perfectly. The tension between art and pop, between American poems from the 19th century and European contemporary jazz resolves into a satisfying whole on this CD. "Good Morning Midnight". The sun rises from the darkest night.
