More electronic music from the Netherlands, this time from Henk Badings, who’d already composed a vast oeuvre in more traditional idioms before he decided to explore the field of electronic music and joined the group of angry young men at the Philips studios (Tom Dissevelt, Dick Raaijmakers, Jan Boerman etc.). A remarkably versatile and extraordinarily intelligent man, Badings had first finished his studies in mining technology cum laude and became an engineer. After a short period of working as a research assistant, he started a full-time career as a composer; besides that, he painted, sculpted and wrote poetry. He learned the basics of composition and harmony all on his own. Badings was largely an autodidact.
Most of the compositions on this set have never been released before. They were all taken from the original tapes and their sound quality is fantastic. The first track, “Capriccio for Violin and two Sound Tracks” will already surprise you because it’s a combination of a late romantic violin sonata with ultra modern computer sounds…kind of Pop Art, so to say.
As usual, a Dutch release comes with an attractive booklet containing historical photos and a thorough explanation of the compositions.
