Об альбоме (сборнике)
It's difficult to not be seduced by this delectable and highly personal new disc from Arnaz, who is paying a loving tribute to the music that her father Desi Arnaz played and helped popularize. She leads off with a terrific take on Arthur Schwartz and Howard Dietz' "You and the Night and the Music," where the Latin rhythms inherent to Schwartz' melody have been enhanced to glorious effect; moreover, with the Spanish translation of Dietz' lyric, one truly feels as if one has been transported back to a time when entertainers such as Desi were all the rage in nightclubs across the country. Other tunes that echo this opening track are Irving Berlin's "I'll See You in C-U-B-A" and "El Cumbanchero," in which the band actually uses her father's arrangement.
In an entirely differently vein are songs such as a disarmingly effective medley of Cole Porter's "It's All Right With Me" and Johnny Mercer's "Something's Gotta Give" and Rube Brown and Mercer's "Fools Rush In," which display Arnaz as more of a contemporary cabaret performer with a torch singer's flair. As the disc nears its conclusion, her tribute to her father becomes explicit. She delivers a tune he wrote in the 1960s, "I Love You," as well as his signature "Babalu," which is cleverly paired in a medley with an early Ricky Martin hit, "La Copa de la Vida," by Desmond Child, Rubi Rosa and Luis Escolar. It's old-school Latin music meets new school, and it's highly satisfying. The disc's final track is Dan Fogelberg's "Leader of the Band," which she delivers with touching simplicity.
Accompanying the CD is a truly wonderful 12-page booklet, filled with color photographs of Cuba and the singer's notes and thoughts on each song. It's not only informative, it also heightens a listener's sense that the disc is somewhat like having an intimate conversation with the stage and screen star
