The Vignola Reunion Trio, which performed on
Saturday, 29 June 1991 as an original produc-tion of Jazz in' It, has an unusual sound, being built around the accordion. At the time, the oldest of its members. Marcel Azzola, had already played in Italy during frequent tours with stars of the "chanson francaise" such as Juliette Greco and Gilbert Becaud, but he was - and unfortunately still is - almost unknown by Italian jazz fans. The same is true for Richard Galliano, who hadn't yet become the Galliano who gave those splendid performances at the Umbria Jazz Winter Festival. Now one of the best-loved French jazz musicians in Italy, he wasn't voted the best new international talent in the 1992 "Top Jazz" referendum, and didn't know our Antonello Salis at all, other than by name through his work with Gerard Pansanel. But with the Vignola Reunion Trio, the two accordionists formed a human and jazz part-nership that would lead to scores of highly successful concerts all over Europe. Azzola-Galliano-Salis: a trio that really was sup-posed to be a quartet with great Italian accor-dionist Gianni Coscia, who unfortunately was busy elsewhere on that 29 June; instead, the group appeared a few months later at the Bergamo Festival as the "Quartette Nuovo".
