review by Alain Drouot
Jean-Pierre Giacobazzi is a painter whose illustrations have adorned LP sleeves and CD booklets.
On Giacobazzi: Autour de la Rade, three masterful musicians gather to pay him back and produce a splendid album.
Andre Jaume and American expatriate Barre Phillips have known each other since the latter moved to the south of France in the early '70s. Here, they are joined by Barry Altschul, who was also living in France at the time.
While the first part of the program is for the most part rather subdued, with a careful blend of emotional, cerebral, and thoughtful music, the second part adds real fire -- in particular, the four-part suite "Point de Vue," which consists of duets pairing Altschul with either Jaume or Phillips. Regardless of the level of intensity, the musicianship and interaction constantly reach new heights. Altschul's precise touch and sense of dynamics do marvels, and his brush work, as on "Eleuthera," is just magnificent. Phillips has never sounded better and displayed so many facets of his talent. He wisely uses the arco to add drama and emotion. As for Jaume, he takes full advantage of the support he gets to cover a full range of emotion. Together, they give a new definition of musical freedom.
If you have room for only one Andre Jaume recording in your collection, it should be this one.
