Об исполнителе (группе)
Brian Landrus is a low woodwind player and composer based in Brooklyn NY. He grew up in Reno NV and was born September 14th, 1978. He began playing saxophone at 12 and was performing professionally by 15. He has become one of the strongest original voices in the music world on baritone saxophone, bass clarinet, bass saxophone, bass flute, and alto flute. He specializes on the low end of the audio spectrum but plays nearly all woodwind instruments. He has been called a "Low Woodwind Expert" by Time Out New York, and a "baritone saxophone and bass clarinet ace", by JazzTimes. He has been voted rising star baritone saxophonist in Downbeat Magazine's International Critics Poll in 2012, 2011, & 2010. Landrus plays in many different ensembles and currently tours the world in Esperanza Spalding's band where he plays baritone and tenor saxophone.
Landrus started his own record label, BlueLand Records in 2011 and has released two CDs on it with a third already recorded and to be released in 2013. "Traverse" was released in 2011 with the Brian Landrus Quartet featuring Michael Cain on piano, Lonnie Plaxico on acoustic bass, and Billy Hart on drums. "Capsule" by the Brian Landrus Kaleidoscope was also released in 2011. This band features Nir Felder on guitar, Michael Cain on Rhodes & piano, Matthew Parish on acoustic bass, and Rudy Royston on drums. The third recording on BlueLand will be released in 2013 with the Landrus Kaleidoscope plus string quartet. The band is Brian Landrus on bari sax, bass sax, bass clarinet, contra alto clarinet, and bass flute. Nir Felder on guitar, Frank Carlberg on Rhodes and piano, Lonnie Plaxico on acoustic and electric bass, Rudy Royston on drums, Mark Feldman on violin, Joyce Hammann on violin, Judith Insell on viola, Jody Redhage on cello, and Ryan Truesdell conducting and co-producing. All the music on these recordings was composed and arranged by Brian Landrus.

Об альбоме (сборнике)
"Baritone saxophonist and reed multi-instrumentalist, Brian Landrus pushes the boundaries of jazz and explores a more fusion-like style inspired by Motown and other related genres.
Contributing to this electric sound is the addition of Nir Felder to the rhythm section whose Jimi Hendrix-like guitar on the Caribbean-flavored "Like The Wind" meanders away from the theme, giving the tune its jazzy edge, while Landrus—on the rarely heard bass flute—blows in gently at first, but becoming progressively more probing with each bar.
In addition to his usual acoustic piano, frequent Landrus collaborator/mentor/producer Michael Cain uses both electric keyboards and electric bass to enhance the 1970s feel of the record. On the romantic and fast-paced "Beauty," his atmospheric and hushed duet with acoustic bassist Matthew Parrish contrasts well with Landrus' emotion-laden, singsong bass clarinet, which ventures far from the melody without losing its way, while drummer Rudy Royston's urgent polyphonics both anchor and drive the music.
Gritty and cinematically dark themes are explored on two compositions. The soul/R&B vibe of "I Promise" is reminiscent of Blaxploitation-era soundtracks, with Cain's lazy piano setting the mood as the dialogue between Felder's blistering guitar and Landrus' resonant baritone saxophone enhances the atmosphere. The darker, more ominous feel of "71 & On The Road" is built upon the edgy yet fluid bass solo which serves as the foundation on which Landrus builds his equally haunting sax lines.
Afro-Cuban rhythms also make an appearance, especially on the title track that showcases Royston channeling his inner Art Blakey under the electric groove of Cain's Rhodes and Landrus' free form improvisation.
The soulful, almost spiritual "Wide Sky," with Cain's flowing notes, and the bluesy nocturne "Now," with soft but never smooth pianism, close the album on a quieter note bringing the unified theme of the disc to an appropriate conclusion"
Hrayr Attarian, "Allaboutjazz"
“Baritone sax and bass clarinet ace Brian Landrus takes a refreshing, modernist approach to the jazz quintet... an exciting voice on the big horn.”
Bill Milkowski, "Jazz Times"
“Top 10 Jazz Album of the Year: This is a very modern, very organic sort of jazz fusion, with no regard for the boundaries that separate jazz, rock, pop, and R&B.”
Steve Greenlee, "Boston Globe"
“Fresh voices on the baritone saxophone are rare these days; Brian Landrus, a fine practitioner of the low-end horn, gathers together impressive collaborators....”
Steve Futterman, "The New Yorker"
“A sleek new disc with shades of funk and electronica.”
Hank Shteamer, "Time Out New York"
“Landrus can get way out when he wants or lay back in a highly accessible groove, too. It’s rare to hear that kind of flexibility and eclecticism these days when specialization comes all too soon to the young players.”
"The Jazz Breakfast" (UK)
“Surges through the tracks with seemingly casual, but in the end, irresistible, energy..”
Bill Donaldson, "Cadence"
